The Goddess Lilith has been described as a demon, in other sources she is an icon who became one of the darkest deities of the pagans. Lilith is one of the oldest known female spirits of the world. Her roots predate Babylon, and come from Ancient Mesopotamia, from the famous Epic of Gilgamesh of Sumerian legend, but she was also described in the Bible and the Talmud of Early Jewish text. Lilith is often envisioned as a screech owl, a night spirit, or a dangerous demon who steals babies in the darkness or seduces men and leads them astray. In Jewish folklore she is known as Adam's first wife, created not from his rib but also from the earth. Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient and lie beneath him, and then fled the Garden of Eden and coupled with a fallen angel, begetting many demonic offspring called the Lilitu that spread chaos at every turn. Many disasters were blamed on her, causing wine to turn into vinegar, men to be impotent, women unable to give birth, and it was Lilith who was blamed for the loss of infant life. Two primary characteristics are seen in these legends about Lilith: Lilith as the incarnation of lust, causing men to be led astray, and Lilith as a child-killing witch, who strangles helpless neonates. Lilith has connections with early views on vampire and sorcery, and also the Greek Lamia, a woman who became a child-eating monster after her children were destroyed by Hera, who learned of her husband Zeus's trysts with her.
