Our Thorn & Moon Henbane Candle in The Poison Garden series is an elegant way to honor the magickal but dangerous Henbane plant. Henbane, or Hyoscyamus niger, is a poisonous plant within the Solanaceae, or Nightshade Family. Another name for Henbane is stinking nightshade or hog’s bean. Known primarily for its hallucinogenic and narcotic properties, large doses can result in delirium, coma, respiratory paralysis, and even death. Henbane material in most Western countries can be bought in pharmacies with a prescription only, and is used for ailments ranging from toothaches to stomach pain,nervous conditions and bone diseases. Sales of henbane oil are not legally regulated and are allowed in shops other than pharmacies. The herb has long been used in witchcraft for various spells and potions, and is known to be an ingredient for Witches flying ointments. In Greek mythology, the dead who walked along the river Styx were crowned with wreaths of henbane flowers. The herb made them forget the memories of the lives they had. Some scholars of Shakespeare believe henbane may be the herb that was used by Claudius to poison King Hamlet. Henbane can be found growing within the famous “Poison Garden” of Alnwick Castle, home to over 100 legendary deadly plants.
