Our Thorn & Moon Belladonna Candle in The Poison Garden series is an elegant way to honor the seductive but dangerous Deadly Nightshade plant. Deadly Nightshade, or Belladonna, is a plant within the Solanaceae, or Nightshade family. The name Atropa is derived from that of the Greek goddess Atropos - one of the three Greek fates who would determine the course of a man's life by the weaving of threads that symbolized his birth, the events in his life, and finally his death, with Atropos cutting these threads to mark the last of these. The name "belladonna" comes from the Italian language, meaning "beautiful lady", originating either from its usage as cosmetic for the face or, more probably, from its usage to increase the pupil size in women. It has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Belladonna preparations are used in homeopathy as alternative medicine treatments for various conditions, and by witches for tinctures and as an ingredient in flying ointments, though it is considered to be one of the most toxic plants in the Eastern Hemisphere. Belladonna can be found growing within the famous “Poison Garden” of Alnwick Castle, home to over 100 legendary deadly plants. A sign hangs on the gate stating, “These plants can kill” and none are permitted to touch or smell.
