In many Celtic based neo-Pagan traditions, there is enduring folklore of the battle of the Holly King and the Oak King, which accompanied the observance of the pagan wheel of the year. Each represent the waxing and waning of the seasons turn, the Holly King reigning over the dark Autumn and Winter months, and the Oak King ruling over Spring and Summer. Some believe that the Kings are brothers, and other beliefs portray the two as twin aspects of the same horned Earth god. Many believe that his imagery was an early inspiration for the Father Christmas legend.

This altar cloth is screen printed by hand with black ink on a delicate green cotton, featuring an original drawing depicting the Holly King. It can be used in your home or on your altar to celebrate the winter solstice at the height of the Holly King’s strength, and honor the Gods of the Old Ways. It measures 14" x 14". It can optionally be adorned with black crocheted lace trim, and with the trim measures 16" x 16".
